It’s the last Wednesday in sober January…ok, ok, I admit I haven’t had a sober January. But I have made an effort to give some good beverage options in lieu of the standard Wine Wednesday post and it seems like everyone has been digging it! In fact, THIS DRINK garnered more views than any other post I’ve shared on A Touch of Lovely, very cool! Wine Wednesday will be back starting next week but I leave you with one last non-alcoholic beverage idea I absolutely love, the Chai Gingerbread Shake.

If you subscribe to Gwyneth Paltrow’s GOOP newsletter you’ve probably seen it but I would encourage you to go the extra step and try it. It’s pretty dang easy to make and it is so yummy and warming to the point it really does feel like you’ve got a little space heater going in your tummy. Think of a super spicy and only slightly sweet chai…basically the drink I always hope for, and am promised by the barista but is always always always way too sweet for my liking. This is not. It is nutty and rich and warm and spicy with just the right touch of sweetness. I know Gwyneth’s recipes can get a little crazy and daunting with weird ingredients you’ve never heard of but this is worth making, I promise. Drink it with the protein powder for a healthy and light breakfast or without for a warming winter snack.

Chai Gingerbread Shake, courtesy of Goop

1 cup warm brewed rooibos chai tea (you can use other chai just know they will have caffeine, rooibos is naturally caffeine free)
1 teaspoon cinnamon
1/2 teaspoon allspice (I used Chinese 5 spice because it’s what I had)
2 teaspoons ground ginger (or a tablespoon or two of fresh squeezed ginger juice)
1/2 cup almond or coconut milk
2 tablespoons almond butter (I used peanut butter, I know that’s not detox friendly but it’s what I had)
coconut nectar, raw honey or stevia to taste (definitely don’t know what coconut nectar is, I used honey)
optional: 1 scoop protein powder of your choice

Make one mug of rooibos chai (or regular chai) according to the instructions, mine just had to be boiled in water for 3 minutes. Add tea to blender with rest of ingredients and blend until smooth. Drink before it cools for optimal digestion and to warm you up.
